An underscore in a latex string works fine in this example: $m_\alpha$

It also works fine in this example: $m_\alpha$ and $\vec{\xi}_\alpha$

But it breaks here: $\vec{\xi}\alpha$ and $\dot{\vec{x}}\alpha$
