Zettelkasten

A system of note taking originally created by Nikolas Luhmann. I came across this watching a video on Clojure and SICMUtils by Sam Ritchie[1]. After a bunch of reading and watching videos, the VSCode addon “Markdown Notes (Zettelkasten remix)” seems like a good option.

The main idea seems to have atomic notes that encompass single ideas and have them link to other notes. Tags may be useful if they are not too general. Hub pages help bring related ideas together. This video makes a good argument (13:52) against having folders for organization.

Some good starting points

  • Make literary and fleeting notes
  • Convert fleeting notes (Google Keep) to permanent notes
  • Build orgianically and don’t commit to documenting everything
  • Leave place holder notes or #todo tag
  • Multiple hubs may refer to the same note
